Does God’s word need to be defended? To answer this question we only have to go to the short book of Jude. Jude 3 says “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” Christians today are God’s representatives here on earth. Unless we speak for God, who will? There are those who will be deceived by worldly wisdom unless we speak up for the truth. What is it exactly that Jude is telling us to earnestly contend for? It is the faith which was once delivered to the saints. It is that which is written, the truth. Why are we to contend? Because the world is full of sin and there are many who are in error teaching false doctrine. There are those who are deceived and the truth must be represented so the world will have a choice. Contending for the faith keeps Christians grounded in the truth. We must contend because God asks us to. People are easily led away from the truth and Satan must not be allowed to have his way unopposed. Who is it with whom we are to contend? It is the world, false teachers, religious leaders, or anyone who would handle in a liberal way the word of God, adding to it or taking away from it. |
What is it that we hope to accomplish? It is to let God speak. So that there can be a distinction between truth and error. Error must be condemned and the weak encouraged. Contending strengthens the church and identifies those opposed to God’s will. It saves souls. How are we to contend. Earnestly and sincerely, with love, with faith and courage, knowing that the truth will ultimately win out over error. We must contend prayerfully, honestly, in the spirit of Christ, teaching the truth by example. Who are to contend? Those who know the truth, who are obeying God. Every Christian who loves the truth and has the conviction to see it prevail over error. It is not wrong to stand for what you believe if it is in harmony with God’s will. We are to oppose Satan and he will flee from us. We know that the truth will overcome in the end. Which side do you want to be on? To fail to contend is to fail to obey God.
