Message From The Scriptures

Baptism

by: Bryan Wallace

The word “baptism” or one of its forms is used in the New Testament 91 times (KJV). The message of baptism as taught by the scriptures is often overlooked, distorted or even ignored by many of those who claim to be followers of Christ. As always, we should let the scriptures speak for itself concerning this or any other subject about which God has given us revelation. The words baptize, baptism, baptized, etc. are English translations of the Greek word “baptizo” meaning “to immerse.” During the act of baptism one is completely covered or buried in water therefore sprinkling or pouring does not fit the definition for baptism.

Baptism is a command of the Lord according to Mark 16:15-16. “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” This commandment is repeated by the apostle Peter in Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” and restated in Acts 10:48 “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.” Peter again emphasized the necessity of baptism in 1 Pet 3:21 “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,)”.

From these passages we can see that baptism is a command of the Lord, that it is to be accomplished in His name (meaning by His authority) and that it is necessary for salvation. This cannot be denied.

The apostles Peter and Paul go on to explain what actually takes place when one is baptized in the name of our Lord. Through baptism: we have remission of sins, Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16, we are united with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection, Rom 6:3-4, we put on Christ, Gal 3:27, we are in Christ, Rom 6:3, we have newness of life, Rom 6:5-6, we are made alive with Christ, Col 2:12;Titus 3:5, we are freed from the power of sin, Rom 6:7;11-14, we are free to become servants of righteousness, Rom 6:16-18.

In spite of all that the new Testament tells us about baptism, there are those who still insist that it is not necessary and plays no part in the salvation of man. I ask you, when you stand in the judgment without having been baptized in the name of our Lord. Do you think you will miss all of the benefits baptism obviously brings? What excuse will you offer Jesus for failing to obey His direct command? Consider it now for in the judgment it will be far too late.
